"One cannot be both ambassador for France and poet!" affirmed the
surrealists in July 1925 in an open letter to Paul Claudel, who was then
French ambassador to Japan. However, the alliance of literature and of
diplomacy is a long-standing French tradition. Why was it suddenly
posing a problem between the two world wars, when the Quai d'Orsay
housed Claudel, Jean Giraudoux, Saint-John Perse (Alexis Léger) and Paul
Morand
? In fact, from Chateaubriand to Romain Gary, every French era has
known a generation of writer/diplomats. More recently, Jean-Christophe
Ruffin and Daniel Rondeau, writers who are not career diplomats, have
been posted to Dakar and Malta, not unlike Wladimir d'Ormesson who was
named to the Vatican, thanks to their literary qualifications as fiction
or essay writers.

The objective of this conference is to understand how the
professionalization of diplomacy at the end of the 19th century
influenced the relationship between literature and diplomacy and
engendered new literary and diplomatic practices. Were the social
functions, the image, the representations and the strategies of the
diplomatic role affected? Was the duality of the writer-diplomat a
source of conflict that could lead to the eventual abandon of one or the
other of the two activities? Or could it instead legitimize the profiles
of these two distinctive activities? We will also examine the
convergence and the divergence between the literary practice and the
evolutionary role that writing plays in a diplomatic career. Have the
new technologies and forms of communication that emerged at the end of
the 20th century provoked shifts in the diplomatic career?

To answer these questions, we will call upon both the history of
diplomatic practices – which have evolved signifi-cantly in recent years
– and international cultural relations. Without attempting to exhaust
the topic through a catalogue of monographs, we aim to identify the
kinds of writers-diplomats that have emerged from the 19th century to
today. The writer-diplomat, a central figure in the diversification of
players and the types of cultural diplomacies, will be examined through
a comparative and transnational perspective. We will examine the French
model as compared to the experiences of other nations.

Finally a round-table of today's writer-diplomats will bear witness to
their professional experiences and take a fresh look at the way their
careers moved into the 21st century.

An exhibition at the Centre for Diplomatic Archives (Centre des archives
diplomatiques de La Courneuve) will illustrate the principal themes of
this symposium.

Preferred topics for paper submissions would address the following
themes:

1. The writer-diplomat, a modern invention?

2. The writer-diplomat, an instrument of cultural policy.

3. How can one be both ambassador and poet? Practices and
interconnections.

4. Literary and diplomatic conventions.

5. Literary genres of the diplomat.

6. Writing and diplomacy, technological evolutions.

7. The French model between the two world wars.

8. The influence of the French model? Writer-diplomats throughout the
world.

The proposed papers (in french or english), including a title, and a
maximum 2000 character résumé, accompanied by a short CV, must be sent
no later than 1st June, 2010. This will reference the research focus
related to the proposal and will attest to the scientific rigor required
by the symposium. Please send your proposals to:
colloque.ecrivains.diplomates@gmail.com

The academic committee will define the conference programme based on the
submissions received during the summer of 2010. The conference
proceedings will be published.
