Making a game out of doing global good

An online game is gaining popularity on Facebook for not merely amassing points, but also creating social good. "Global Good Challenge," launched by the United Nations Foundation, offers chances to win prizes -- such as tickets to the MTV Video Music Awards and VIP passes to a Lady Gaga show -- for taking social action online and in the real world to help combat global issues such as child marriage, disease and poverty. "Instead of donating money, we want people to donate their social media influence," says the game's creator, Zaw Thet. CNN (10/6), VentureBeat (10/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • UN Foundation executives are singled out for work
Among the executive honorees on Variety's Women's Impact list are Elizabeth Gore and Dani Zapotoczny of the United Nations Foundation, who lead large-scale partnerships and community outreach, respectively. "My job is not to save someone's life but to provide you with the opportunity to save someone's life -- whether you're using your voice to sign a petition against child marriage or giving $10 to buy a bed net," Gore says. • Africa: More money doesn't mean less poverty
Poverty levels remain high in resource-rich countries in Africa and actually are rising in Angola, Gabon and Congo-Brazzaville despite strong economic growth paced by sales of minerals and oil, according to the World Bank. Leaders "have to make the conscious choice to invest in better health, education and jobs, and less poverty for their people, because it will not happen automatically when countries strike it rich," said Shantayanan Devarajan, lead author of the latest Africa's Pulse analysis. • GAVI getting right vaccines to the right children
GAVI Alliance CEO Seth Berkley attributes much of the organization's success -- notably helping to save more than 5 million lives through vaccines -- to collaboration with partners, among them UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation. Such coordination to deliver vaccines to poor children in developing countries "is itself an innovation" and "the heart of our work," Berkley says. • Predicting the next big pandemic
The destruction by humans of global ecosystems will almost surely lead to the next pandemic, according to disease scientists, who predict that "the Next Big One" likely will be a virus based in wildlife. "They agree that sheer human abundance, density, and interconnectedness make us highly vulnerable. ... There are dangerous new viruses lately emerging against which we haven't been immunized," writes author David Quammen. Yale Environment 360 (10/4) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Red Cross: Afghan lives to get worse
The International Committee of the Red Cross says that the departure of foreign troops from Afghanistan is giving rise to armed groups and bleaker prospects for the lives of ordinary Afghans. A report by the International Crisis Group think tank says that "prospects for clean elections and a smooth transition are slim" after U.S. and NATO troops withdraw in 2014.
