Utah Latinos made the difference, time for immigration reform

Salt Lake City, Utah — The following is a statement by Tony Yapias, community activist,  former State Director of the Office of Hispanic Affairs and host of Pulso Latino in Radio La Jefa 1490/1550 AM.

"Yesterday Latinos in Utah and around the country made history by voting in record numbers. Latinos tired of being passed by and ignored finally showed their voting power. Latinos played an important role in key battleground states like Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, Florida and New Mexico"

"While most Utahns voted for Mitt Romney and republican candidates, Utah Latinos overwhelmingly voted democratic. This morning the new reality is that Congressman Jim Matheson win of Mayor Mia Love in the Fourth District is mostly due to the Latino Vote in Salt Lake County. Congressman Matheson won by 2,818 votes." (http://www.pewhispanic.org/2012/10/01/latinos-in-the-2012-election-utah/)

"Yesterday, in Pulso Latino in La Jefa 1490/1550 a Latino radio caller said "today I took fourteen members of my family to vote and we all voted straight party ticket for the democrats". It appears that many Utah Latinos have learned from Utah republicans to vote straight party ticket. I am pleased with the Latino turnout and the many immigrants who in recent years became citizens and now have let their votes and voices be counted"

"Now that the elections are behind us and President Obama has been re-elected Latinos will not let Washington D.C. have another pass a solving our immigration problems. In 2013, we will work with the President and Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform"

"This should be a wake-up call to republicans, support immigration reform. It's my hope that the nation now will pay greater attention to Latinos and with 50,000 Latinos turning 18 each month. The next election cycle is only two years away. Wake-up republicans!"
