UN: Gbagbo's regime looks for a way out

The UN is reporting that advisers to besieged Cote d'Ivoire President Laurent Gbagbo -- who refused to relinquish power despite losing a UN-recognized election in November -- are looking to negotiate a surrender. The UN and France jointly launched helicopter gunship strikes against forces loyal to Gbagbo after attacks on peacekeepers and civilians. Our peacekeepers, United Nations blue helmets, are risking their lives at this time -- even at this moment -- to protect civilians [in Cote d'Ivoire] throughout the dramatic chapter that is playing out as we speak now. Securing a democratic outcome has been costly but is essential."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Click here for the full story.

"It would appear that the UN and France have joined the Outarra-led offensive against Gbagbo's forces. I imagine that is only a matter of time before Gbagbo is killed or captured."
