Dear Friend, Kofi Annan said that "gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance." Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and here at GlobalSolutions.org, we're celebrating by asking Congress to ratify CEDAW, the Women's Equality Treaty. Will you join us? Women are the cornerstone of poverty eradication. Here's just a few of the ways that women are imperative for diving economic and social change: Women own the majority of small businesses and farms in developing countries and in turn invest more of the money they earn in their families. What's even more shocking is that one extra year of education for a girl increases her wages by 10-20%. A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five. It makes sense then to invest in women's equality and support CEDAW. Though the United States has in many ways been a champion for girls, we could do more. The U.S. has not ratified the Women's Equality Treaty, officially known as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). We are one of only seven countries who have not ratified the treaty, along with known human rights violators like Sudan, Somalia, and Iran. We don't want to be on the same list as those countries do we? That's why we need you to ask your Senators to bring the Women's Equality Treaty to the Senate floor for a vote. So what does the Women's Equality Treaty do? It reduces sex trafficking, domestic violence, provides access to education, ensures the right to vote and ability to own a business, ends forced and child marriages, and guarantees access to health care. CEDAW will strengthen the United States as a global leader in standing up for the rights of women and girls in countries around the world. Join us-ask your Senator for a vote on the Women's Equality Treaty! Thank you, GlobalSolutions.org Team |
