INAF U4410: Political, Social, and Economic Development of Brazil II (1.5 Points)
Call Number: 63447
Date/Time: Wednesdays, 6:10pm – 8:00pm (from March 7 to April 25)
Location: 802 International Affairs Building
Instructor: Rodrigo R. Soares, Lemann Professor of Brazilian Public Policy and International and Public Affairs
Course Overview: This course discusses some of the major economic, political, and social problems of contemporary Brazil, drawing from the expertise of researchers, analysts, policy makers, and civil society representatives. The course is unusual in its reliance upon expert outside speakers rather than on a fixed syllabus and set of lectures by the instructor only. The topics are determined based on the invited speakers’ expertise and on the main current issues in the socioeconomic and political debates in Brazil. Students planning on enrolling in this course are encouraged to also enroll in Public Policy Challenges in Brazil and Latin America (INAF U6621), which is offered in the first half of the Spring Semester. Public Policy Challenges in Brazil and Latin America is built around the discussion of four main current public policy challenges: inequality, education, crime, and health. The two courses are complementary to each other and take place at the same hours and location, just in different halves of the Spring Semester. Public Policy Challenges in Brazil and Latin America provides a somewhat more focused background for some of the issues that are relevant for the discussion developed in Political, Social, and Economic Development of Brazil II.
