Title: Representations of World War I in Latin America: A comparative study
between Argentina & Brazil
Speaker: Olivier Compagnon, Professor of History, New Sorbonne University –
Paris 3
Unknown in 20th Century Latin American historiography, World War I had a
fundamental role in rupturing existing Latin American identity in the first
three decades of that century. This presentation will use a comparative
approach to understand national specificities as well as the relationships
between both countries. Its objective will be to reevaluate the period of
1914-1918 in Latin America, analyze the mutations that emerge in
representations of Europe after 1914 and show how the war and its
consequences contributed to building a political and cultural nationalism in
Argentina as well as in Brazil.
