Get active

The Arizona Republic
Arizona's primal scream about illegal
immigration got the nation's attention. Now,
Arizonans need to make sure the awful
mistake does not define our state.
So, don't be quiet now.
Those who disagree with the immigration bill
that Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law Friday
need to let their feelings motivate them to
stay engaged in the political process.
The impassioned protest surrounding this
issue should now be directed at two
enormous problems.
The first is the continuing failure of the
federal government to enact immigration
reform that secures the border, creates a
legal pipeline for needed workers and brings
undocumented people living in this country
into legal status.
President Barack Obama said federal
immigration reform is necessary to preclude
more laws like the one Arizona just passed.
No kidding. Just do it, Mr. President.
The other problem Arizona must face is
exemplified by the new state law itself: Failed
federal immigration policies have left
Arizona frustrated to the point of self-
mutilation.
We are a state with a large Latino population.
This law treats Arizona's Latinos like
strangers.
not be tolerated and her creation of a police-
training board to help law enforcement
implement the new law will likely prove
entirely inadequate. That's because this law
effectively means Latinos in Arizona - even
those whose grandparents helped build this
state - had better not leave home without
proof of their right to be here.
This sows seeds of suspicion and
resentment in a state that needs the talents
and energies of all its people.
This law will also make people in migrant
communities afraid to report crimes. That
cruel side effect is good news to criminals. It
should scare the rest of us.
The fear and reluctance to call the cops will
linger even if legal challenges to this law
succeed.
Something else will linger, too.
Those who pushed this bill tend to forget the
hard cash rewards Arizona realizes from
sharing a border with Mexico. In addition to
the billions of dollars that legal Mexican
shoppers pump into our economy each year,
there are trade and commerce benefits that
savvy business people want to multiply. The
publicity around this law undermines those
economic opportunities.
Some might argue that these negative effects
- and the damage to Arizona's image - are f
air trade for addressing illegal immigration.
But this law does nothing to slow the
smuggling of people and drugs across our
southern border. It will not make the
ranchers who live in the border region where
Robert Krentz was murdered any safer.
Arizona will remain a gateway for criminals
who smuggle people and drugs across the
border as long as U.S. immigration policies
remain unchanged.
With this new law, the state's legitimate anger
over inaction at the federal level has been
directed inward to the heart of Arizona's
heritage and its future. Arizona is ripping
itself apart. You can change that.
First, demand federal immigration reform.
Second, become politically active in the state
and refocus Arizona's collective energies
toward real solutions that bring Arizonans
together as a group instead of separating
them by color.
Don't let this ugly, punitive law define
Arizona.
