UN chief urges talks, not war, over Iran nuclear aims

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday that Iran must demonstrate the peaceful nature of its nuclear program while urging a diplomatic solution to tensions amid media speculation that Israel could attack Iran's atomic facilities. A Russian scientist has denied helping Iran develop technology necessary to build an atomic weapon after the release of a report by the world body's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, concluding that "Iran has carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device." • Palestinians might still force UN vote
Palestinians might demand a vote next week at the United Nations Security Council on their application for full UN membership, which is destined for defeat, in order to pressure countries to publicly justify why they do not support a Palestinian state. After the vote, Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, could nevertheless pursue the lesser status of "observer state" at the world body in order to save face, and deflect attacks by his political rivals.
