Dear Friend, Intervention in Syria is all everyone is talking about. But what about what could have been done to prevent the mass atrocities that occurred? Yes there's two things the world, and specifically the US, should have done. First, President Obama should announce to the world that the US will sign the Arms Trade Treaty when he addresses the UN General Assembly on September 24th. Second, the US should start a discussion with the members of the UN Security Council about the responsibility not to veto actions related to stopping human rights atrocities. Will you send President Obama an email asking him to take both of these actions? Why does signing the Arms Trade Treaty matter? The Arms Trade Treaty will reduce armed violence and conflict. For example, the treaty would make it harder for Russia to argue that its arms deals with Syria are legal under international law. There would also be fewer refugees because there would be less conflict. 26 million people worldwide have been forced to flee due to armed conflict. And wouldn't the world be more peaceful with less weapons to fuel civil war? Why is the responsibility to not to veto important? It's time for the permanent members of the UN Security Council to agree that they won't use the veto when dealing with mass atrocities. Many dignitaries such as Madeline Albright, Kofi Annan, and Ban Ki Moon support limiting the veto when it comes to the horrific crimes of genocide and the appalling crimes against humanity and war crimes that we have witnessed in Syria. No leader should ever use helicopter gunships, artillery and chemical weapons on unarmed women and children. Join us in telling President Obama that it's time to act to stop the next Syria from happening. Thanks, Don Kraus President & CEO |
