| Dear Supporter, Today and tomorrow, world leaders are gathering in New York City to discuss global refugee and migration challenges. We are calling on the U.S. government to lead by example by changing its response to the refugees and migrants in our own backyard. Click here to tell President Obama to take action for protection, not harmful detention and deportation>> Across the globe we are facing the greatest refugee crisis since World War II. In our own hemisphere, hundreds of thousands of children, women, and men are being forced to flee their homes due to horrific levels of violence, corruption, impunity, and poverty in the Northern Triangle countries of Central America—El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Today we urge our government and the governments of the region to stop harmful detention and deportation practices, instead ensuring that individuals and families have full access to legal counsel, protection, and asylum. We welcome the U.S. announcements of expanded refugee resettlement in the region; but the U.S. government must stop backing increased border militarization and migrant interdictions in Mexico and redirect support toward strengthening access to asylum in Mexico. Meanwhile, we urge President Obama to immediately grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from Northern Triangle countries residing in the United States. Last week, over 400 LAWG supporters sent these demand to the president—thank you! As he prepares to speak to other nations, help us make sure President Obama hears our call loud and clear!
