Utah Latinos pleased with Arizona recall election:
Congratulations to State Senator Elect, Jerry Lewis
Salt Lake City, UT. – Latinos in Utah are pleased with the results of the recall election in Mesa, Arizona of State Senator Russell Pearce. Our congratulation goes to State Senator Elect, Jerry Lewis (Republican) who won yesterday. This is the first time in U.S. History that a sitting State Senate President (Russell Pearce) has lost a recall election in part due to his anti-immigration laws that he authored.
Voter in Mesa, Arizona have sent a message to the rest of the country that we need to elect political leaders who will work towards finding a solution rather that persecuting human beings as SB-1070 has been in Arizona. Since passing SB-1070 other states including Utah have use as a model to pass a similar law.
Tony Yapias, of Proyecto Latino de Utah said "it's hard to believe that a year ago Senator Pearce won a landslide election. What a difference a year makes. Senator elect Jerry Lewis' victory should be a warning to right-wing politicians who want to use illegal immigration as a means to stay in office. We need more "Compassionate Republicans" like Senator Elect, Jerry Lewis, Utah Attorney General, Mark Shurtleff and former Florida Governor, Jeb Bush who recognize that we must fixed our current immigration problems and not only pass laws anti-Latino and anti-immigrant laws. Once again, congratulations to Senator Elect, Jerry Lewis. To the citizens of Mesa, Arizona for having the courage to say " enough"and to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints for making several (three) public statements that the approach to resolve our immigration problems should be with compassion and loving one's neighbor and protecting families"
