World is nearing climate point of no return, IEA says

The last real chance to combat climate change could be "lost forever" within the next five years if countries continue to build power plants, factories and buildings dependent on fossil fuels, according to the International Energy Agency, which has completed the most thorough analysis yet of world energy infrastructure. The analysis, published today, projects that the entire carbon budget -- in which global emissions of carbon dioxide must be held to no more than 450 parts per million in order to stay below 2 degrees Celsius of warming -- will be used up by 2017. "The much anticipated bombshell report from the IAEA on Iran's nuclear activities is out. The drama now moves to the IAEA Board of Governors which can recommend a course of action to deal with the report's conclusion that Iran has a robust and ongoing nuclear program despite international prohibitions."

  • Rock band backs UN chief's sustainability drive
American rock band Linkin Park is partnering with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to promote the new initiative Sustainable Energy for All, which aims to ensure universal access to modern energy services as well as double both the rate of improvement in energy efficiency and the share of renewable energy worldwide. The United Nations Foundation, through its new Energy Access Practitioner Network, will join representatives from the private sector and civil society to solve energy issues in order to achieve universal access by 2030. • Assessing global philanthropy
The growth of philanthropic giving, which in 2009 accounted for $53 billion of the $120 billion in total official development assistance, is the subject of a two-week conference beginning today in Bellagio, Italy. While private foundations could serve as a source of innovation in development -- especially as rich countries trim foreign aid budgets in response to the global financial crisis -- the corresponding lack of publicly available information undermines standards of accountability and transparency. • Network aims to help holy cities manage pollution
Pollution associated with massive influxes of pilgrims to religious sites every year is taking a heavy toll on holy cities, environmentalists warn. The newly formed Green Pilgrimage Network, which has won the backing of major holy cities and the United Nations Development Programme, aims to help authorities worldwide promote environmentally friendly practices among 100 million pilgrims that visit sites each year. • World's poor should get aid directly
Initiating mechanisms to transfer international aid to the world's poor can help streamline development efforts, according to a report from Britain's National Audit Office. Providing food, cash and other assets removes the need for individuals to await government progress on infrastructure and systems development for services. • Global Fund aims to turn the page with anti-fraud measures
The inspector general of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has released this week several reports on the misuse and recovery of grant money in an effort to beef up its anti-fraud credentials in the run-up the fund's 10th anniversary. "No one can guarantee that waste and misuse will never occur, but the Global Fund can guarantee that it will use the full force of the law to discover it, correct it and make the findings public," writes Natasha Bilimoria, head of an organization that advocates on behalf of the Global Fund in the United States. • Effect of plant pests on food supply is forecast to worsen
Scientists say that global food security, already under threat by speculation in commodities markets, likely will be further destabilized by plant pests and diseases that devastate crop production -- and already account for an estimated 40% loss in global production.
