Opposition to female circumcision is growing in Africa

An estimated 8,000 communities across Africa have banned or publicly declared opposition to female circumcision, according to the United Nations, whose agencies spent more than $6.1 million in 2011 to combat the practice, which involves cutting away all or part of female genitalia. A map shows the frequency of the procedure across Africa. Los Angeles Times/World Now blog (2/6) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"By now, you have probably heard of that nefarious UN plot to install bicycle lanes in your neighborhood and smart meters in your home. Last week, the New York Times clued us on to the fact that a certain cadre of American voters seem to believe that the [UN] is imposing an agenda of environmental sustainability in their own communities -- and these voters are fighting this intrusion in Town Halls across the country."

  • Russia, China draw a line on Syria
The vetoes by Russia and China of a UN resolution aimed at stopping the sweeping violence in Syria was a counteroffensive, in diplomatic terms, to recent Security Council authorization of military intervention to protect civilians in Libya and Cote d'Ivoire. The interests of the two countries are increasingly aligned in their disdain for measures they liken to violations of state sovereignty. • UNCTAD: Global "new deal" could remedy financial crises
A report published Tuesday by the UN Conference on Trade and Development advocates reform of the global financial system as the main theme of the upcoming UNCTAD XIII conference in Doha, Qatar. A so-called "global new deal" based on the U.S. response to its Great Depression in the 1930s -- which favored public investments in energy, agriculture and social infrastructure, and strong regulation of financial and labor markets -- could correct practices that lead to the global financial crisis. • The workers who helped fight polio in India
Volunteers and social workers across India are the unsung heroes of the country's successful push to eradicate polio, helping to administer some 900 million doses of a polio vaccine over the past year alone. "I decided to get involved because I wanted to do something for the future of our children here," said Madara, a 76-year-old street hawker who has been volunteering to help with immunization efforts for the past six years. • Oxfam urges localization of humanitarian aid
Humanitarian action of the future will depend increasingly on donors and nongovernmental organizations from the areas that are directly affected by emergencies, according to a report by Oxfam, the confederation of 15 international aid organizations. Local organizations could respond more swiftly than the United Nations and international NGOs, said the report, which cites the work of NGOs in Somaliland and Central America. In an interview, Anita Sharma, director of the UN Foundation's Millennium Development Goals Initiatives, talks about the achievements and remaining challenges of the foundation's Every Woman Every Child initiative, which aims to save the lives of 16 million women and children. "I think you have seen increases in political will, but it needs to be sustained and accelerated," Sharma said. "We're hoping by the sustained and refocused education that they become the driver of economic change and improvement." • How local control helped forests in Nepal
Communities across Nepal have assumed management of a quarter of the country's forests since the 1980s, helping to reduce poverty as well as the effects of climate change. The pioneering program could become a model for other countries with degraded forests. AlertNet (2/8) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
