[RED DEMOCRATICA] Out of the shadows

 

Take Action! Dear Friend,  We've all seen the impact that armed violence can have either in our own communities or through the television and news. It's reached an unacceptable high. Now, finally, we can do something to move the illicit weapons that commit most of this violence out of the shadows.  Tell President Obama to sign the Arms Trade Treaty and move the black market for arms out of the shadows! Did you know that one person dies every minute from armed violence? That's more than 500,000 per year. The Arms Trade Treaty can change that. For example, it will make it harder for Russia to argue that its arms deals with Syria are legal under international law. Will you send President Obama an email asking him to sign the Arms Trade Treaty at the opening of the UN General Assembly on September 21? The US is the largest exporter of weapons in the world and yet we aren't one of the 83 countries who have signed the Arms Trade Treaty. There's something wrong with this picture so we're asking President Obama to be a leader and sign the treaty. What exactly does the Arms Trade Treaty call for? It prohibits arms transfer authorization to states if the arms will be used in the commission of genocide, crimes against humanity, or attacks directed at civilians. That sounds pretty great. How could it be a bad thing? The answer is it isn't. So why hasn't the US signed the treaty yet?
