The world has been reluctant to respond to the famine in Somalia like it did in the early 1990s, during a similar famine -- for which it provided billions of dollars in aid, UN peacekeepers and tens of thousands of U.S. troops. In a radio interview, Jeffrey Gettleman, East Africa bureau chief for The New York Times, sums up the various dimensions to the drought-induced famine from which the United Nations says 750,000 Somalis could soon die of starvation. • New draft tempers call for Syria sanctions
A draft resolution before the UN Security Council has softened the demand for sanctions against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an effort to garner the support of China and Russia. The resolution being proposed by European powers, and on which council members are expected to vote by the end of the week, makes future sanctions contingent on a failure by Assad to end the violent crackdown on popular protests.
