India passes 2-year mark without a polio case

India has gone more than two years without a diagnosis of infection with the wild polio virus, a milestone that is "a triumph of consistent and strong political will as well as international coordination," Krista Mahr writes. If India goes a third year without a polio case, it will be declared free of the disease -- one of the world's major public-health successes. Lessons learned in India could be helpful in neighboring Pakistan, where the disease is still endemic. • Pillay: No improvement in N. Korea human rights
The world is paying disproportionate attention to North Korea's nuclear and rocket programs at the detriment of the human rights situation, which is "one of the worst, but least understood and reported," said United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay in a statement. At least 200,000 North Koreans are believed to be political prisoners. BBC (1/14) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Hopes dim for talks between Iran, IAEA
Talks are slated to resume Wednesday between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency over the country's nuclear program. Russia has raised concerns about the delay in negotiations with the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, plus Germany. "The outlook is not bright" for the talks, IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said. Perth Now (Australia)/Australian Associated Press (1/14), Reuters (1/11) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Community malaria initiatives outperform top-down programs
Aid organizations increasingly believe that truly effective prevention of malaria happens at local levels, and not through commodities-driven, top-down measures. "Bed nets are only good if people use them; spraying is only effective if people allow the spray teams into their homes. There has to be a grass-roots approach to malaria control, communities have to own it. And in order to own it, they have to be provided with the information and education to make an informed choice," says Scott Filler of the Global Fund.
