Studies: Cutting carbon emissions will buy time in food crisis

Increases in crop yields over the past 50 years are at risk of being wiped out by damage to crops -- notably staples like corn, wheat and soybeans -- caused by the extreme heat that is being brought on by climate change, research shows. One study suggests that setbacks could be delayed if governments act to slash carbon emissions. "Climate policies can have a big effect in reducing the impacts on people," said Nigel Arnell, of the University of Reading. The Guardian (London) (1/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Prisoners' tales spurred Pillay to act on N. Korea
The decision by United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay to cast a spotlight onto abuses in North Korea's labor camps came after she met in 2012 with two camp survivors. "Their personal stories were extremely harrowing. They described a system that represents the very antithesis of international human rights norms," said Pillay, who on Monday called for an international probe of the conditions to which an estimated 200,000 people are subjected. Conditions in several states could mean the country will be the last to eradicate the disease, but the World Health Organization says shifting from oral to injected vaccines could improve Nigeria's chances.
