[RED DEMOCRATICA] Spring forward to victory

GlobalSolutions.org March Newsletter

Dear Friend,

We're working hard to grow a movement for a more responsible and cooperative US role in the world. GlobalSolutions.org  had a major campaign success last month and we're also excited to introduce our new campaign! There's plenty for us to do together. Here's what our community has recently been up to:

New Campaign: Support a Bulletproof Arms Trade Treaty Campaign

Email your Senators to urge them: Support The Arms Trade Treaty!

Negotiations to finalize an Arms Trade Treaty will be begin next week at the United Nations, running from March 18 to 28. While efforts to reduce gun violence in the U.S. move forward, the international community is watching see if NRA lobbyists once again seek to derail the Treaty when negotiations resume.

Click here to urge your Senators to support a bulletproof Arms Trade Treaty. When there are international laws for the sale of iPods and bananas but not AK-47s and grenade launchers, we've got a problem. The Arms Trade Treaty sets uniform standards for international arms sales -- bringing foreign governments up to high U.S. standards and the black arms markets out of the shadows. The Treaty protects legitimate trade and holds foreign governments accountable for selling arms to human rights violators. Without it, warlords and terrorists will keep exploiting loopholes to get weapons.

These weapons are used by warlords to force child soldiers to kill their parents, by terrorists to attack American soldiers and missionaries, and by gangs to rape refugee women and girls. NRA lobbyists know the Treaty only affects foreign countries, not gun laws for American civilians, and helps keep weapons out of the hands of terrorists who kill Americans overseas.

The Treaty protects law-abiding Americans' freedoms and our troops overseas, but NRA lobbyists are lying about it anyway to fundraise off American gun owners. This Treaty is in America's security, business, and moral interests. It protects legitimate trade and cracks down on weapons sales to war criminals and terrorists. We can't let NRA lobbyists derail it. Make sure your senators know the truth about the treaty.

Do you want to do more to spread awareness about the Arms Trade Treaty? On Monday March 18th we'll be participating in a Thunderclap in support of a strong Arms Trade Treaty. What is a Thunderclap? I'm glad you asked. Thunderclap is a website that allows you to donate a Facebook  status or a tweet to a cause. The goal of this Thunderclap is to reach 1 million people with a message about why the world needs a strong Arms Trade Treaty. Want to participate? Click here.

Why is this more important now than ever? Because Senator Moran from Kansas, backed by the NRA, introduced a resolution stating that the Arms Trade Treaty would infringe on your Second Amendment rights and then got 27 other Senators to agree with this big lie. What can you do about it? Email your Senators and ask them to support a Strong Arms Trade Treaty.

Campaign Success: Passing the Violence Against Women Act

Because of your actions and commitment to protect women's rights as human rights, Congress passed the inclusive, Senate-version of the Violence Against Women Act! This victory shows that when it comes to women's basic human rights, Congress can band together on this bipartisan issue to protect women from sexual and domestic violence.

Our work has just begun. Once we thank Congress for supporting VAWA, we can urge them to take this globally by ratifying CEDAW - the international women's rights treaty.

Social Media: 7 times the fun

Do you love our content so much that you want to hear from us daily? Make sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. It is time to build a movement as grand as the ideals that we embrace.

Most Americans understand that international cooperation is essential to build a safer and more secure world. We are passionate about human rights, ending genocide, eliminating nuclear weapons, or preventing war. We want to manage climate change, stop the global spread of AIDS, or improve institutions like the U.N. While we may differ on priorities, what binds us together are our shared values and the skills we need to change the world.
