"The violence in the Central African Republic that has erupted over the past few weeks is horrific and threatens to plunge the country into brutal ethnic conflict...But I can't help but think that there is one category of people in CAR who are still being left behind: refugees who fled from Congo to the relative stability of CAR." Security Council actions paved the way for Iranian nuclear deal
Resolutions approved by the United Nations Security Council on Iran since 2006 laid the groundwork for this year's successful nuclear negotiations with Iran, writes Joe Cirincione. Social entrepreneur Paul Polak on ending global poverty
Social entrepreneur Paul Polak envisions a worldwide movement to end poverty fueled by businesses that can transform the livelihoods of the poor while being profitable enough to attract investment. Those eager to launch such a business must "start by going to where the action is, talking to the people who have the problem, listening to what they have to say, and doing the grunt work in the field," he says. Women improve lives through Brazil's cash-payment program
Women are being empowered to make decisions and improve self-sufficiency and health thanks to Brazil's cash-transfer program, called "bolsa familia." The program allows registered families to withdraw cash each month. "Women become more active under the bolsa familia system. This is important because, in the poorest communities, there is a culture of them being dependent on men," says Talita Sousa Nascimento of the Maranhao Institute of Social-Economic and Cartographic Studies. South Sudan clashes spread beyond capital, observers say
Violence that began in South Sudan's capital has spread to the town of Bor in Jonglei state, United Nations relief officials say. "The situation is said to be quite tense, heavy fighting apparently broke out there in the wee hours of this morning and we've had hundreds of civilians streaming into the [UN mission] compound on the southeastern edges of Bor," said Joe Contreras of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
