UN launches food appeal for Africa's Sahel region
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has called upon nations to contribute more than $2 billion to meet the needs of as many as 20 million "food insecure" people in the Sahel region, including 5 million acutely malnourished children. The European Commission has offered $190 million in aid, and the U.S. wants to integrate short-term help with sustainable development through its Resilience in the Sahel Enhanced program. Pillay's rise from apartheid-era South Africa to UN human rights chief
Although lacking enforcement powers, Navi Pillay is the international embodiment of the quest for human rights and justice as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Pooja Bhatia writes. Pillay, born in South Africa to parents of Sri Lankan descent, experienced discrimination on her way to representing the Robben Island prisoners, including Nelson Mandela. "[H]er consistent flagging of injustice and atrocity at least provides some psychological comfort to its victims -- and, for the rest of us, a sense that there does exist a moral order," Bhatia writes. Health workers face daunting challenges in South Sudan, CAR
With the approach of the rainy season, physicians and medical personnel working with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are struggling to distribute anti-malarial treatments, including bed nets, in the conflict zones of South Sudan and Central African Republic. IPCC chief discusses human role in climate change
Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that the vast amount of information gathered since 2007 confirms, with more than 95% certainty, that human actions are responsible for most of the global warming taking place since the mid-20th century. Russia announced that the Syrian government would make a large delivery of chemical materials for destruction by March 1 and would attend the second round of peace talks. Observers arrive to monitor South Sudan cease-fire
International observers have arrived in South Sudan to oversee a cease-fire between forces of President Salva Kiir and rebels led by former Vice President Riek Machar, who said he has formed a "resistance" group.
