[RED DEMOCRATICA] Call your Mother, then your Senator

 

Give Your Mother a Treaty, not just a Card Where does your Senator stand on Women's Rights and U.S. ratification of CEDAW? TAKE ACTION NOW! This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Mother’s Day as an official U.S. holiday. It took over 30 years for the original “Mother’s Day for Peace,” a movement for human rights, to achieve this recognition.  Yet, even now, our country remains one of seven countries which has still not ratified the Women’s Equality Treaty (CEDAW).  This is not some oversight. A coordinated and well-funded opposition to CEDAW is preventing U.S. ratification. Groups like Focus on the Family, the Eagle Forum and the Heritage Foundation are spreading misinformation about the treaty, decrying it as a threat to “traditional” values and cajoling Senators into remaining quiet.  It’s time this irresponsible silence by our Senators ended. Before the mid-term elections in November, we want every U.S. Senator to go on the record stating if they support U.S. leadership on women’s rights and U.S. ratification of CEDAW. Will you help us, Friend?  Ratification of this treaty is critical to helping women world-wide win their basic rights to health care, to go to school, own and inherit property, take part in public life and fight violence. As I await the any day now arrival of my first child, I think often the 289,000 women who died in child birth last year and the fight to help women win their basic human rights feels more personal than ever.
