The Pachamama Organizing Committee produces this event. Pachamama Peruvian Arts (PPA) began as a project of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance; and since 2008, PPA is an independent non-profit organization. Pachamama Peruvian Arts relies on the community's support to continue this successful program.
Pachamama Peruvian Arts first began offering classes in the traditional performing arts of Peru in January 2004. Six years later, we are thrilled that close to 600 students have attended weekly classes on the rhythms and techniques, history, and the social and cultural importance of Peruvian art forms at PS 212, Jackson Heights. Pachamama Peruvian Arts seeks to strengthen the practice of traditional Peruvian music and dance, promote cultural interchange and mutual understanding among Peruvians, Peruvian Americans and the community at large and to empower New York's Peruvian community with pride through youth education, workshops and collaborative community presentations throughout the New York metropolitan area. The Pachamama Organizing Committee is comprised of Peter Apaza, Sonya Lopes Bayona, Carlos D. Bernales (Artistic Director), Rosa Carhuallanqui, Andres Jimenez, Alessandra Brivio, Gabrielle M. Hamilton (CTMD Program Director), and Luz Pereira (Executive Director). We welcome Peruvian musicians, dancers, artists, scholars and cultural activists to join us. If you are interested in learning more how to help this program and mission as volunteer or with donations, please contact PPA Executive Director: Luz Pereira luzpny@aol.com or in 212-683-2381.
