Vargas Llosa gives Nobel Literature lecture in Stockholm
Describing his experiences and the evolution of his political beliefs, the Nobel laureate stressed the importance that literature plays in shaping opinions and creating awareness.
"Without fictions we would be less aware of the importance of freedom for life to be liveable, the hell it turns into when it is trampled underfoot by a tyrant, an ideology, or a religion." (Download the English version of "In Praise of Reading and Fiction")
He also said he despises every form of nationalism – "short-sighted, exclusive, that cuts off the intellectual horizon" – and that it should not to be confused with patriotism, "a generous feeling of love for the land where we were born…… Homeland is not flags, anthems, or apodictic speeches about emblematic heroes, but a handful of places and people that populate our memories…"
"Nothing has contributed as much as nationalism to Latin America's having been Balkanized and stained with blood in senseless battles and disputes, squandering astronomical resources to purchase weapons instead of building schools, libraries, and hospitals," he said.
His voice broke when he praised his wife, Patricia, with whom he has been married 45 years, but the moment was quickly lightened when he ended the tribute by saying "she is so generous that even when she thinks she is rebuking me, she pays me the highest compliment: 'Mario, the only thing you're good for is writing.'"
Vargas Llosa was well accompanied, by his family and by close friends, including painter Fernando de Szyszlo, his literary agent Carmen Balcells, Peru's minister of Culture Juan Ossio, Public Ombudsman Beatriz Merino, Pedro Cateriano, who was a close advisor during his Libertad political days, nephew and film producer Lucho Llosa, and author Jose Miguel Oviedo, who is trustee professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Spanish American Literature.
Vargas Llosa is the first South American winner of the $1.5 million Nobel Prize in literature since Colombia's Garcia Marquez in1982, and the first Spanish-language writer to win since Mexico's Octavio Paz in 1990.
The Nobel week of festivities, including concerts and performances, culminates on Friday when the Nobel Prizes are awarded by Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf, followed by the Nobel Banquet.
