The UN Security Council on Wednesday voted to increase the number of peacekeeping troops in Somalia from 8,000 to 12,000. The 50% increase is in response to pledges by al-Shabab and other armed groups to merge forces in order to fight the transitional federal government, as well as African Union troops. A federal court has sentenced former Argentine dictator Jorge Rafael Videla to life in prison for the murders of more than two dozen political prisoners during the country's Dirty War.
