Assad tells UN chief crackdown is over, is asked to quit by Obama

Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad told the United Nations on Wednesday that he had ended the military crackdown against anti-government protesters, but not before the U.N. withdrew 26 nonessential international staff and their families from Syria. Assad's assertion included pledges to reform the country's constitution and election process, and to receive a humanitarian mission. Today, U.S. President Barack Obama called on Assad to leave office. BBC (8/18), Reuters (8/17), The Washington Post/Checkpoint Washington blog (8/18) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"Global food prices have been on a fairly steady increase since June 2010. Still, you don't really hear world leaders sounding the alarm too much. It's amazing that we don't quite think of this as a huge global crisis that ought to be immediately remedied."

  • UN seeks famine aid, long-term food solutions
Urgent, increased action to combat famine in the Horn of Africa is needed to help 3.2 million people on the brink of starvation, says United Nations Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos. While aid groups have been rushing food aid to the area, food experts from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization and other groups say attention must also be paid to finding long-term solutions to Africa's food-supply problems. • UNF's Calvin sees local role in global issues
Kathy Calvin, CEO of the United Nations Foundation, recalls her roots in her hometown of Fort Wayne, Ind., where the local Rotary Club is contributing to fundraising efforts that already have yielded $60 million to help pay for polio vaccines worldwide. "A large function of the UN Foundation is translating to average Americans, including Hoosiers, how they can become involved in global issues," she says. The News-Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Ind.) • Rich countries are criticized ahead of UN diseases summit
The reluctance among rich governments -- specifically the U.S., EU and Canada -- to commit to global efforts to fight cancer, diabetes and heart disease is being characterized as short-sighted in a letter from the NCD Alliance, a group of about 2,000 health organizations focusing on noncommunicable diseases. NCD chief Ann Keeling said that wealthy countries are blocking plans for a UN summit next month that would set global benchmarks for the reduction of preventable deaths from such diseases. • Malaria diagnostic tests are ignored in Sub-Saharan Africa
Health care experts worry that some African medical personnel are needlessly using up anti-malaria resources and leaving patients at risk for drug-resistant malaria and other conditions. Across Sub-Saharan Africa, medical personnel commonly prescribe anti-malarial drugs and treatments even for patients who have tested negative for the disease. • Mosquitoes gain resistance to nets, study suggests
A study suggests that mosquitoes are already developing resistance to bed nets treated with insecticide. The nets are being distributed throughout Africa in an effort to stamp out malaria. The findings, which stem from research in a small village in Senegal, indicate that resistance to one type of insecticide used in the netting rose from 8% to 48% from 2007 to 2010. Staff members for seven members of Congress and singer/actress Mandy Moore recently traveled to Cameroon to distribute insecticide-treated nets through the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets anti-malaria campaign. • Community support helps revive Mexico fish stocks
Support from residents to enforce a fishing ban in the Cabo Pulmo area of Mexico's Baja California state has boosted fish populations in a small national marine reserve 460% since 1999, according to a study published in the PLoS One journal. Researchers hope the success will encourage more conservation efforts with community support in the Sea of Cortez and other areas affected by overfishing. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed efforts by the government and civil society in Malawi to open a dialogue after protests over chronic poverty led to 19 deaths last month. • Tribunal unseals Hariri indictment
Nearly a dozen people conspired for three months to assassinate Rafik Hariri, among them four men sought in the 2005 death of the former Lebanon prime minister, according to a 47-page indictment released Wednesday by a special United Nations-backed tribunal. The leader of Hezbollah, to which the four men have been linked, called the findings "pure speculation," calling the evidence, based heavily on cellphone records, primarily circumstantial.
