IAEA plan would broaden inspections of nuclear reactors

Forty-four of the world's 440 nuclear reactors would be inspected for safety over a three-year period as part of a draft proposal by the International Atomic Energy Agency to prevent accidents such as that at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan. The plan would fortify the IAEA's status in nuclear-regulatory and reactor standards worldwide even while preserving key roles for national atomic-energy safety agencies. • UN to screen movie on its role in Bosnia sex trade
A film that depicts United Nations-linked peacekeepers in Bosnia as complicit in the country's illicit sex trade will be screened for UN senior staff and member states, according to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who calls the sex trade "a blight on humanity and our conscience" in a letter to the film's director. The film, "The Whistleblower," is based on the experiences of a peacekeeper who tried to save the lives of two Ukrainian girls sold into sexual slavery in the late 1990s and early 2000s. • Nigerian refusals of the polio vaccine can be traced to Pfizer case
A 15-year-old court case in the U.S. illustrates the reasons behind the mistrust of major health campaigns, specifically immunizations for polio, in parts of the developing world. The Nigerian region of Kano -- the center of polio-vaccine refusals in Africa since 2003 -- is also where a Pfizer drug trial was connected to the deaths of 11 children and dozens of cases of ailments including brain damage, paralysis and deafness. Shell Oil is being criticized by environmentalists for a lack of transparency in efforts to stop a leak from a North Sea platform -- generally considered the world's safest drilling region. The U.K. government says the oil is unlikely to reach shore, although an environmental group said the continuing leak and the discovery of a second leak raise concern about plans to drill in the deep waters of the Arctic Ocean.
