ICC's first verdict shows justice takes time

The landmark first verdict Wednesday handed down by the International Criminal Court against Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga shows international justice might be slow but there can be accountability that can make a difference. Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said he would "seek a sentence close to the maximum" for Lubanga, who could face life imprisonment. "The [Kony 2012] video has succeeded in triggering worldwide awareness of LRA brutality. Let us hope that that this heightened awareness can be built upon to find real solutions to the conflict and to address the suffering of the tens-of-thousands of victims affected by this war in the region."

  • Call for UN action as Syria crisis reaches year
As the popular uprising in Syria passed the one-year mark a coalition of 200 NGOs from 27 countries urged Russia and China to stop blocking efforts at the United Nations to end the violence that has killed more than 8,000 people, mostly unarmed civilians. United Nations-Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, was scheduled on Friday to brief the Security Council on efforts to broker a diplomatic solution to the crisis. • Can diplomats do comedy?
Some of the most senior UN-based ambassadors have strayed from the bounds of news conferences by doing interviews on comedy programs, often at their own peril. "No one is a choicer prey for a comic than a diplomat," Colum Lynch writes. But not all become a punchline -- this post looks at how Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Susan Rice and other UN diplomats who have tangled with professional comics. • Women farmers neglected at global food peril
Among the greatest threats to global food security is the continued sidelining of women farmers. Experts gathered this week in New Delhi for the first Global Conference on Women in Agriculture noted women have fewer rights than men to buy, sell or inherit land, as well as borrow money and sell crops. • How climate change imperils wealthy countries
Even if carbon emissions were to drop drastically overnight, the global effects of climate change would be "inevitable and unavoidable for the next 20 or so years," according to climate expert Saleemul Huq. The world has entered a new "third era" of global warming that is different in that it affects even rich, industrialized nations, he said. AlertNet (3/14) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Water Forum said to backtrack on rights
The language of the declaration on water policy at the close of the sixth World Water Forum falls short of reaffirming water and sanitation as human rights, according to observers, who fear governments might find in the document justification for shirking legal and financial obligations to uphold rights recognized by the UN General Assembly in 2010. • Worry grows over Sudan's Nubans as aid stymied
As awareness grows about the plight of Nubans trapped in Sudan by fighting between government forces and rebels allied with South Sudan, pressure, too, is growing for cross-border operations to deliver urgent humanitarian aid. But Sudan continues to refuse to allow United Nations aid workers into the Nuba Mountains area. ForeignPolicy.com/Turtle Bay (3/14) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Solar panels on West Bank set for demolition
The Israeli government is slated to demolish solar panels built by nongovernmental organizations in Palestinian villages in the West Bank that are not connected to the national electricity grid. The United Nations says that, while Israel provides electricity, water and paved roads to unauthorized Jewish settlements in Area C, it rarely grants building permits to Palestinians, and demolishes homes and animal sheds.
