UN seeks sanctions against Mali rebels as children targeted

The United Nations Security Council on Thursday endorsed sanctions against armed groups that have seized control of the northern territories of Mali, warning that the desecration of Muslim shrines recognized by UNESCO could lead to war crimes charges but declining to back military intervention. Teenage boys in the territories are reportedly being recruited by Islamist fighters linked to al-Qaida, girls are being sexually assaulted, schools closed and cholera cases increasing. "It's been over a decade since international peacekeeping forces first came to East Timor, which has certainly seen ups and downs during that time. But now, East Timor is on a solid very path. UN Peacekeepers are on their way out, and an election scheduled for Saturday is poised to be event-free."

  • UN agency endorses taxes to offset donor fatigue
Governments should impose taxes to fund programs that would fight the effects of climate change and help developing countries, according to a United Nations agency. There is a $167 billion shortfall in donations, partly because of economic austerity, according to the UN World Economic and Social Survey. The agency suggests raising more than $400 billion annually through a slate of levies, including carbon taxes. AlertNet/Reuters (7/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Haiti redevelopment project comes with concerns
An industrial park in a region of Haiti largely undamaged by the 2010 earthquake has emerged as the showcase project for the country's reconstruction. But an examination by The New York Times reveals numerous concerns, chief among them prospects that the Caracol Industrial Park will benefit foreign companies more than Haitians, 390,000 of whom are living in tents. • Global pact erodes women's rights, Robinson says
Former United Nations human rights chief Mary Robinson has criticized the Rio+20 international agreement as "hideous" in its undermining of support for the rights of women and girls, especially reproductive rights. "Instead of advancing women's rights, we seem to be rolling them back," said Robinson, a member of the Elders, a group of world leaders.
