Helping child soldiers in CAR lead normal lives

A UNICEF program in the Central African Republic is helping child soldiers recover from forced conscription by armed groups. "UNICEF knows that for the child soldiers it saves to truly recover, they need to be given the means by which they can support themselves. Otherwise they risk being drawn into prostitution, if they are girls, or the exploitative world of diamond mining, if they are boys -- or even risk being re-recruited back into the armed group as there they know they will receive food and some shelter," writes Oliver Poole. "The remarkable support that the resolution has received, from all regions and across the development spectrum, is a clear testimony that sustainable tourism has a vital role to play in a fairer and sustainable future for all," said Taleb Rifai, head of the UN's World Tourism Organization.
