Nearly half of world's food wasted, report says

As much as 2 billion metric tons of food are wasted each year, tantamount to nearly half the food produced worldwide, according to a report by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Waste in developed economies is attributed to marketing practices and consumer behavior. "This is food that could be used to feed the world's growing population -- as well as those in hunger today. It is also an unnecessary waste of the land, water and energy resources that were used in the production, processing and distribution of this food," said Tim Fox of IME.
