Predicting the year to come at the United Nations

As United Nations headquarters in New York finishes a $2 billion renovation phase, the "old, sloppy business of managing the world's crises will remain" in 2013, writes Colum Lynch. Conflicts in Syria, Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as the state to Iran's nuclear program, are priorities for UN envoys, Lynch says. Separately, Armin Rosen of The Atlantic weighs in with his foreign affairs predictions for the year. "Timor Leste has come a very long way. It is now a country that no longer needs UN peacekeepers to ensure security. The peacekeeping mission formally ends on December 31st, marking a huge turning point in the once violence-plagued country."

  • UN investment pays off in Timor-Leste
More than a decade after the murders of Carlos Caceres and two other employees of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, peacekeepers from the world body have left Timor-Leste -- now a functioning, relatively stable democracy that serves as a model for global development. "[T]oday I am comforted by the knowledge that his sacrifice, and that of so many Timorese, meant something. ... Timor-Leste has begun to emerge from the darkest kind of violence because of the United Nations and heroes like Carlos," writes Peter Yeo, head of the Better World Campaign. The One Laptop Per Child project in the Ethiopian villages of Wenchi and Wolondhete is providing poor children with tablet computers loaded with learning software in a bid to show that they can teach themselves and each other in the absence of formal schools. "If [the] project succeeds, it will be a veritable revolution, one that could put an end to the plight of uneducated children and help bridge the gap between rich and poor," writes Fiona Ehlers.
