| Dear Supporter, Thanks to all who pitched in making calls to Senate Judiciary Committee members on such short notice last week! Not only were some of the worst amendments defeated, but your calls helped build the support needed for Senators to add specific amendments to improve the immigration bill, including amendment #23 offered by Sen. Hirono (D-HI) and amendment #6 by Sen. Feinstein (D-CA), measures that would help protect children and family unity at the border, and amendment #10 offered by Sen. Blumenthal (D-CT) to discourage racial profiling. For more details on how all amendments considered on the first day of markup fared, click here. Unfortunately, a key amendment which would have limited dangerous deportation practices, amendment #2 offered by Senator Coons, was withdrawn because of objections by other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The good news? This amendment is still being negotiated and we still have time to make sure a measure to limit dangerous deporations is included in the final bill. Will you help us limit dangerous deportation practices by calling Senator Flake, Senator Feinstein, and Senator Schumer? See the sample script below. While you’re at it, please take the time to thank Senator Coons for his tremendous leadership in pushing for an end to dangerous deportation practices, like deporting migrants in the dead of night to unfamiliar border cities in Northern Mexico where migrants are targets for violence and exploitation. Senator Coons' #2 amendment would have prohibited such practices and we’d like to thank him for his tireless efforts to ensure that migrants aren’t needlessly put in harm’s way. Increase your impact by calling Senator Flake (R-AZ), Senator Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Feinstein (D-CA)! You may use the sample script below when calling Senator Jeff Flake (202-224-4521), Senator Charles Schumer (202-224-6542) and Senator Dianne Feinstein (202-224-3841): "I urge Senator Flake/Feinstein/Schumer to support an amendment similar to the withdrawn amendment offered by Senator Coons, to protect the lives of migrants by limiting dangerous deportation practices." Please also call Senator Chris Coons ( 202-224-5042) to thank him for his leadership: "I want to thank Senator Coons for his introduction of amendment #2 aimed at limiting dangerous deportations. The human rights community will continue to stand with him as he considers introducing this amendment on the Senate floor." Let us know how your call went by filling out this quick survey. Thank you for your continued dedication and activism to advance a more humane and common sense immigration system! In solidarity, Jenny, Ruth, and Emma The LAWG Mexico & U.S./Mexico Border Team P.S.
