UN General Assembly voices concern on the state of human trafficking across the globe

"Human trafficking has developed into a global criminal enterprise that generates an estimated US$21 billion in illicit revenue per year," said Vuk Jeremic, President of the UN General Assembly, during the opening of the High-level Meeting on the Appraisal of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. With around 25 million victims, human trafficking affects every country in the world. The two-day High-level Meeting, which opened on 13 May, reviewed progress made since the adoption of the Global Plan of Action in order to strengthen national and international efforts to end thi! s global enterprise.

The 14th session of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group on the Right to Development opens in Geneva

Inline On 13 May, the 14th session of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group on the Right to Development opened in Geneva. Over five days, the Working Group will revise and refine the draft "right to development operational sub-criteria," developed to help assess the extent to which States are individually and collectively taking steps to establish, promote and sustain national and international arrangements that cre! ate an enabling environment for the realization of the right to development. The right to development is the right of peoples and individuals to the constant improvement of their well-being and to a national and global enabling environment conducive to just, equitable, participatory and human-centred development respectful of all human rights.

WSIS Forum 2013 focuses on post-2015 development agenda

46th Session of the Commission on Population and Development fails to reach consensus on addressing the needs of women and young migrants

Inline The forty-sixth session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) was held at UN Headquarters in New York from 22 to 26 April 2013. The Commission’s meeting focused on the theme “New Trends in Migration: Demographic Aspects.” The meeting emphasized the dual nature of migration as bringing many development benefits, but often occasioning human rights violations. The Commission adopted by weak consensus a resolution on human rights protections for migrants, but failed to reach agreed conclusions at the closing of the session.

Deadline Extended to 22 May: Registration for Informal Hearings for High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development

Inline The deadline for NGOs to register for the informal interactive hearings and the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development has been extended until 22 May 2013. There is one registration process for the High-level Dialogue (3-4 October) and for the hearings, to be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 15 July 2013.
