Ban: Armed drones are subject to international law
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reiterated the UN's position that armed drones need to operate within international law in a speech today at the National University of Science and Technology in Islamabad. "This is a very clear position of the United Nations. Every effort should be made to avoid mistakes and civilian casualties," he said. Ban, who is on a two-day visit to Pakistan, also urged Pakistan and India to work to resolve their differences peacefully. What Brazil can bring to the Security Council
The United Nations must respond to challenges in innovative ways, writes Simon Adams, executive director of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect. Brazil, which seeks a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, has a commitment to human rights and experience with Responsibility to Protect that could make a difference, he argues. "A better world and a reformed UN are both possible, but it will require grit and determination to achieve either," Adams writes. The Huffington Post/The Blog/O Estado de S. Paulo (8/12)

The metrics of development need to be rethought
Economic measures such as gross domestic product need to be revamped because they "represent a dramatic oversimplification of wellbeing," Terra Lawson-Remer writes. "This debate is evolving quickly and the policy implications of what we measure and how we measure it are profound," she argues. Council on Foreign Relations online/Development Channel blog (8/12)
