UN's Pillay decries alleged killing of captives by Syrian rebels
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay called "deeply shocking" reports that Syrian rebels killed at least 30 Syrian government soldiers near Aleppo last month. A UN team is investigating. "There needs to be a thorough independent investigation to establish whether war crimes have been committed. How sub-Saharan Africa's urbanization is creating health threats
The more sub-Saharan Africa becomes urbanized, the greater the health threats from road traffic, cancer and diabetes, says a World Bank report. Deaths from road traffic are expected to "become the biggest killer of children between five and 15 by 2015, outstripping malaria and AIDS," writes Oliver Balch. With diabetes and cancer also expected to rise, "a more holistic" approach to health care is needed, he argues. The Guardian (London) (8/5)
