European Union's Economic and Financial Affairs Council has given its approval to the future elimination of visa requirements for Colombian and Peruvian citizens.
El Comercio reports that the Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the European Union (Ecofin) has adopted a measure in favor of visa elimination. According to El Comercio, Ecofin decided that the elimination of visas will be forthcoming once the European Commission has evaluated the situation of Colombia and Peru. Furthermore, bilateral reciprocity agreements will have to be put in place before the visa requirements can be eliminated.
Spain has acted as Peru and Colombia's biggest advocate in the European Union, having introduced the proposal in August of 2013. Even though progress toward the elimination of visa requirements for the two countries has been steady and promising, the bureaucratic process is ongoing. It is unknown how long the process will take.
If approved, the plan would allow Peruvian and Colombian citizens to travel visa-free to the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days. The Schengen area includes Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Monaco, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
