LUPE Leading Powerful Women
Union, New Jersey- LUPE Fund, Inc. will be hosting its 10th Annual Power of Women Reception honoring trailblazing community leaders on May 7, 2014 at Costa del Sol in Union, NJ. The Power of Women event will bring Latina women who are recognized and admired locally, nationally, and globally for their talents, service, and commitment. Close to 100 LUPE members, community leaders, educators, and company representatives will join us in welcoming three remarkable women, keynote speaker Caridad De La Luz, and honoree Miriam Colón, and awardee Donna Stivale. The Power of Women is LUPE's annual signature fund raising event to provide scholarships, conferences and leadership training for Latina women who are seeking to develop personally and professionally.
This year LUPE will be kicking off an evening of excitement with activist, poet, and actress Caridad De La Luz. De la Luz's poetry explores social justice and Nuyorican identity. When she debuted at the Nuyorican Poets Café in 1996, de la Luz adopted the persona of "La Bruja" ("The Witch"). She has also shared her work on HBO's Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam, and at the American Museum of Natural History. Miriam Colón will be presented as the Power of Women honoree and will be receiving a special recognition for her amazing contribution to the development of her community. The Power of Women Award honors a distinguished Latina who has contributed to the advancement of Latina empowerment Colón is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre. Ms. Miriam Colón Valle is a pioneer of the Latino theater movement in New York. She is the leading creative force behind the PRTT's 46th years of activity. Ms. Colón's latest film credit is as the protagonist of "BLESS ME ULTIMA" by the distinguished Mexican writer Rudolfo Anaya, adapted for the screen and directed by Carl Franklin. The Amiga Award is given to a non-Latina woman whose work has advanced LUPE's goals. Donna Stivale is the Executive Coordinator at Lowenstein Sandler and has been instrumental in helping LUPE Fund move forward in its efforts to educate, empower and engage Latina women by working tirelessly to facilitate meetings, programs, and seminars. Ms. Stivale's dedication to service and seeing others succeed is unprecedented.
For the past decade all of the honorees and awardees have demonstrated a deep rooted commitment to their community and others, and give real meaning to perseverance, leadership, and resilience. Some of the past honorees have included Lillian Plata, Esq., Natalie Morales, news anchor and journalist for NBC, and Zulima Farber, former Attorney General of New Jersey and the first Latina to serve as Acting Governor of New Jersey. LUPE is proud to host the Power of Women event as they believe it is a way to pave the way and sow seeds for future Latina leaders..
