UN's Amos: More Security Council action needed on Syria
United Nations humanitarian aid chief Valerie Amos pressed the Security Council on Wednesday for action to help deliver aid in Syria, saying the existing resolution does not go far enough. She reminded the body that several rounds of resolutions were needed in other humanitarian situations such as those in Somalia and Bosnia. "I think what we should be doing is focusing on how we best get the aid in," she said. Reuters (4/30), The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (4/30)

Report: Renewable projects could help sub-Saharan Africa
Development in sub-Saharan Africa could boom with investments in large-scale renewable power projects, says the Green Alliance. "Even with robust economic growth, [the region's] existing energy infrastructure is a brake on progress. ... Ukraine gets IMF bailout as eastern region slips to militants
The International Monetary Fund on Wednesday cleared a $17 billion bailout for Ukraine's struggling economy. The move comes as Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov acknowledged that the country's eastern regions were slipping into the hands of pro-Russian separatists.
