Ban presses Security Council to block weapons shipments to Syria
The Security Council should declare an embargo on weapons to Syria, said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who called on countries to stop sending arms. "I am here to express my anger and disappointment at the cold calculation that seems to be taking hold -- that little can be done except to arm the parties and watch the conflict rage," Ban said. Efforts by the United Nations Security Council to unilaterally authorize humanitarian-aid shipments to Syria "would amount to an attack on the Syrian state and on its territorial integrity and political independence," lawyers for the government argue. UNEP chief urges halt to plastics dumping in oceans
Plastics waste in oceans causes $13 billion annually in damage to marine life and livelihoods, says Achim Steiner, head of the United Nations Environment Programme.
