Haiti's schools struggle to keep doors open

Independent schools and hospitals are struggling to survive until a planned public-private partnership that will help fund reconstruction and administration comes into practice. Haiti's reconstruction commission approved $500 million to jump-start efforts Oct. 4, the date students were set to return to school, but many institutions delayed the start of classes. Thousands of schools are still without safe temporary replacements for damaged buildings or full of rubble. The New York Times (free registration) (11/14)

  • Online crop calendar fending off Africa food crisis
The aid community may now refer to an online cropping calendar to determine when seeds need to be planted and harvested in 43 countries in Africa. The calendar, which was created by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, is intended to reduce the likelihood of a food crisis by providing up-to-date planting schedules that reflect climate conditions and disasters, such as flood and drought. • Saudis on UN Women board sparks criticism
Critics are taking aim at Saudi Arabia's successful bid for a board seat on newly created UN Women. Journalist Mona Eltahawy notes that Saudi Arabia secured its seat because of its standing as an emerging donor country even though the country officially treats women as "virtual minors." Eltahawy writes, "If UN Women is to have any bite, it should focus on justice for Saudi women and not on their country's 'generous contributions.' " The Toronto Star (11/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Geoengineering wins support as climate tool
Support is growing for more research and development of geoengineering technology as short-term measures to help battle global warming as governments struggle to agree on ways to decrease the world's dependence on fossil fuels and transition away from a carbon-based economy. Critics worry geoengineering, such as efforts to replicate the natural mitigation caused by a volcanic eruption's ability to reduce the amount of sunlight reaching Earth and affect global temperatures, will have unforeseen consequences and may ultimately increase the pace of climate change. The U.S. Department of Justice has reluctantly released portions of a report chronicling the fate of Nazi emigres after World War II. The report examines the activities of the Office of Special Investigations, created in 1979 to deport Nazis, and reveals clashes between government departments over the handling of Nazis and their sympathizers such as Arthur Rudolph who went on to work for NASA after arriving in the U.S. in 1945. OSI efforts resulted in the deportation of more than 300 individuals, according to the report. The New York Times (free registration) (11/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Sudan pre-vote tension could destabilize Darfur
UN peacekeepers fear that tensions between military forces in north and south Sudan will "spill over" into Darfur, complicating efforts to end the seven-year conflict there. • Security concerns grow as Hariri investigators prepare indictments
Diplomats and politicians are expressing concerns that impending indictments from United Nations investigators into the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri could spark political instability or violence if Hezbollah members are named.
