One dead in clashes with UN peacekeepers in Haiti

A demonstrator in the Haitian city of Cap Haitien was shot and killed Monday during violent protests against UN peacekeepers, who many blame for the outbreak of cholera that has swept through camps for earthquake survivors, killing more than 1,000 and hospitalizing thousands more. Seven peacekeepers were injured. The UN linked the violence to elements looking to disrupt upcoming elections. BBC (11/16) , The Washington Post (11/15)

"The mood, however, was much different than that of Sudan's recent elections. Somehow, it seemed that people were more excited about the process, and that they'd be happy to stand in line for hours or even days if necessary in order to participate in it."

  • UN meets on fears of Sudan military escalation
The UN Security Council is slated to meet today with representatives from southern Sudan concerning the referendum to decide whether to secede from the northern part of the country after a 21-year civil war. Reports of a major troop buildup near the north-south border are false, a UN official said. Reuters (11/15) , AlertNet.org (11/15) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The World Health Organization has convened a meeting of global health officials to consider tighter controls on tobacco, such as limits on the use of additives in cigarettes and more disclosure from tobacco companies. • Climate treaty on modest goals is likely in Mexico
Officials have colored the upcoming UN climate talks in Mexico with a sense of urgency. They say that continued inaction by world powers only translates into higher costs to combat global warming. A deal is seen as likely because the goals, such as creating a "green fund" to assist poor countries, are considerably more modest than those last year during similar talks in Denmark. • UNESCO raises concerns over Serengeti highway plan
Tanzanian authorities should reconsider plans to build a highway through the Serengeti national park, as the project could have detrimental effects on local ecosystems, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova says. The proposed highway would cut through a large portion of the park that enjoys World Heritage Site status. Google/Agence France-Presse (11/15) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Russia's jury trials highlight limits of reform
The challenges associated with jury trials -- introduced in 1993 to shift power away from the state to ordinary citizens -- demonstrate how little reform has occurred within the country's judicial systems since the fall of the Soviet Union. Jurors often find themselves facing harassment or pressure to step down, while jury decisions are routinely overturned by judges. • Foreign investors are seen as key to Myanmar reform
Countries such as China and India, major trading partners with Myanmar, could hold significant sway over the pace of political and economic reforms in the country, which is ruled by a military junta. However, competition among the two regional powers and Thailand is likely only to stymie democracy efforts. CNN (11/15) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • China's economic strategy draws criticism
International anger is growing in response to China's government-run economic strategy that allows local businesses to maintain a competitive edge over companies operating under market driven systems. The government provides low-cost capital and other incentives for growth to support development of new technologies or supply of raw materials deemed national priorities in a manner that has led critics to challenge China's practices at the World Trade Organization. United Nations officials are urging Guineans to accept results of the country's first peaceful transfer of power since gaining independence in 1958 after electoral authorities declared former Sorbonne professor Alpha Conde the winner Monday.
