ST. GEORGE – Several Utah lawmakers and the author of a controversial immigration enforcement bill in Arizona meet in St. George Saturday for a forum on immigration.
The event, hosted by the local Citizens' Council on Illegal Immigration, will include discussion on possible immigration legislation that the Legislature could consider in its upcoming session. One proposed bill mirrors the Arizona bill, which requires law enforcement to check the legal status of people while enforcing other laws.
Utah Sen. Dennis Stowell, R-Parowan, and Reps. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman, Chris Herrod, R-Provo, and Steve Sandstrom, R-Orem, all staunch supporters of stricter immigration laws, will be on hand, as well as Arizona Sen. Russell Pearce, the author of the Arizona bill.
The forum is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Gardner Center on the campus of Dixie State College, 225 S. 700 East in St. George.
The immigration debate continues to heat up in Utah, with a group of conservative officials and religious leaders signing onto the Utah Compact last week. The compact calls for any Utah legislation to follow a few basic principles, calling for the federal government to handle enforcement, for local law enforcement efforts to focus on criminal activities, for an effort to keep families together and for recognition that immigrants play a positive role in the economy.
The compact picked up support from a number of influential groups, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Catholic Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Utah.
Sandstrom, whose bill closely resembles the Arizona law, responded to the compact Monday by saying his goals closely coincide with those of the compact.
