April 9th, 2012 President Obama: RSVP for Rio+20 Tell President Obama to RSVP for Rio+20, showing that the United States is committed to taking real action towards a low-carbon green economy. | The world can't wait any longer to address the escalating global challenges that we face. In June 2012, the United Nations and Brazil are organizing the Rio+20 Earth Summit. This Summit aims to ensure that all nations take concrete steps to meet the needs of this generation while assuring we maintain a healthy planet for future ones. More than 100 Presidents and Prime Ministers have already said that they will be attending, but the United States has yet to announce its representative to what the UN Secretary General has said is the most important conference in its history. President Obama is meeting with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff today, and we need him to know his presence at Rio is critical. Tell President Obama to RSVP today for the Rio+20 Earth Summit, showing that the United States is committed to leading the world towards a low-carbon, green, sustainable economy. Much progress has been made towards sustainable global development in the last 20 years, but the world is still facing huge economic and social challenges that will only be intensified by climate change. Mega disasters, crop failures, and an increased threat of instability and failed states worldwide are threatening our well-being, economic prosperity, and national security of both Americans and the global community if we don't take action now. Climate change is a symptom of the unsustainability of our current economic system. It is a global problem that no one nation can solve alone. But the United States can be a leader, as we've proven time and again. The United States was a decade ahead of the global curve on saving the ozone layer when it banned ozone depleting substances from aerosol cans. And it was the United States that set standards for European nations to eliminate lead from gasoline. We can harness this "can do" spirit again and preserve the planet for future generations by being real leaders at Rio+20. Without strong leadership, the Rio+20 Conference could fail and do little more than add to the mountain of promises that leaders have made over the last four decades. The agreement being drafted has already ballooned from 19 to 240 pages of old recycled ideas that won't really get us on a sustainable path. The world is out of time for empty talk. What is needed is a "cloud of commitments" for action from countries, communities, and corporations. President Obama can lead the way and put real U.S. pledges on the table. Tell President Obama to attend the Rio+20 Earth Summit and demonstrate that the United States is serious in working with other countries to protect the planet and its people. Thanks for all that you do, Amanda B. Advocacy Manager |
