| - Ban looks to quash Sudan conflict
The governments of Sudan and South Sudan were urged Thursday by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to withdraw armed forces from border areas where fighting has brought the countries to the brink of war. The Arab League called an emergency meeting on the escalating violence, and South Sudan said it would pull out from the oil region of Heglig within three days. Google/The Associated Press (4/19), Reuters (4/20) - UN urged to send more monitors, quickly, to Syria
Envoy Kofi Annan on Thursday urged the United Nations Security Council to approve the swift deployment of more monitors after the world body and the regime of President Bashar Assad signed a preliminary agreement on the terms of the UN mission to observe a tenuous ceasefire. Conditions had yet to be agreed upon governing the use of aircraft, however, while sectarian kidnappings were on the rise in the province of Idlib. Before his sudden death earlier this month Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika engineered an agriculture-led turnaround -- against the advice of the foreign aid community at the time -- that could serve as a model in Africa for overcoming chronic hunger, food insecurity, and famines, writes Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. Sachs details the program, which revolved around targeting small landholders with subsidies to purchase enough fertilizer and seed to improve soil health and ramp up production. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (4/19) - The economic toll of bias against women
The underutilization of the 2 billion women across Asia is tantamount to annual losses in productivity of $89 billion, according to a survey by the global nonprofit organization Asia Society. Sex-selective abortions and infanticide, particularly in China and India, highlight a bias in favor of sons that means girls in some countries receive worse education, health care and nutrition. The Washington Post/The Associated Press (4/18) - Water everywhere in new Africa map
Scientists have analyzed below-ground water resources across the African continent, and they have discovered aquifers that could provide for many of the estimated 300 million living without safe drinking water. Huge stores of groundwater in aquifers were found especially in Libya, Algeria and Chad. The researchers caution that because these desert aquifers are no longer being replenished from rainfall, they could be quickly depleted if tapped too rapidly. BBC (4/20) - Electric vehicles gain popularity across China
Fleets of three-wheeled electric cars -- ranging in cost from $600 to $1,500 and topping out at speeds of 30 kilometers per hour -- are gaining footholds in rural China, while slightly more expensive and faster electric-powered vehicles not even recognized officially as cars by the government are also gaining in popularity. The government recently announced it would provide financial support and individual subsidies to encourage the use of some 500,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2015 and 5 million by 2020. Hundreds of thousands of people across the world, mobilized by the record-breaking online campaign by U.S. charity Invisible Children, were expected today to paste urban centers with posters highlighting the abuses committed by Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, which is operating primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo. But aid agencies working in central Africa warned that military efforts to capture Kony likely would lead to retaliatory attacks, and endanger child soldiers.
