Supreme Court skeptical of Arizona immigration law
a Win-Win for Latinos
 
 
Salt Lake City – The U.S. Supreme Court today heard arguments on the constitutionality of the Arizona Law SB-1070 the initial report is that the Justices may rule a split decision. It appears that the Justices don't see a problem with local police officers checking the immigration status of undocumented immigrants when stopped. The Justices however are concerned with the Arizona Law that requires undocumented immigrants to be charge as a crime for not carrying documents and for looking for a job.
 
Tony Yapias, former Director of the Office of Hispanic Affairs and Director of Proyecto Latino said "Today's hearing at the Supreme Court is concerning to undocumented immigrants should the Justices rule that police officers can question their immigration status. But, as we have seen in Arizona it may have an impact on Latino U.S. Citizens and legal residents as they will have to proof their legal status" On the short term, Republicans and anti-immigrant groups will claim victory. On the long term it spells "doom" for the Republicans as the Latino electorate and demographic continues to grow.
