Contribute to a High-level Panel consultation by 26 October

The UN Secretary-General\'s High-level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda will hold its first substantive meeting in London from 31 October to 2 November 2012, and will focus on the issue of household poverty.

As part of the Panel\'s efforts to reach out to civil society and other stakeholders, a global online consultation is being held from 19-26 October around the same framing questions the Panel will address in London. There are a total of four core questions: two on the theme of "Human Development" and two on the theme of "Jobs and Livelihoods."

Interested organizations and networks are invited to participate in the consultation, which can be accessed here. Submissions in English are strongly encouraged, but submissions in French and Spanish will also be considered.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty observed at the UN Headquarters on 17 October

Inline On 17 October, the observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was held at UN Headquarters in New York, as well as in other places around the world. The 2012 Commemoration focused on the theme: "Ending the Violence of Extreme Poverty: Promoting Empowerment and Building Peace." It drew attention to the fact that extreme poverty is a violation of human rights and a threat to social stability and order that can only be addressed through enhanced cooperation among different actors, including the UN, Member States, civil society and other stakeholders. In ! his message, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asserted that "poverty is easy to denounce but hard to fight against," especially in times of austerity measures.

Planning conference on stakeholder engagement for post-Rio and post-2015

InlineFrom 20-21 October, at Pace University in New York City, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), in partnership with civil society organizations Green Economy Coalition and Stakeholder Forum held an event entitled "Post-Rio to Post-2015: Planning International Stakeholder Engagement." Co-chaired by Oliver Greenfield of the Green Economy Coalition and Farooq Ullah of Stakeholder Forum, the conference aimed to identify key entry points for stakeholders and to inform stakeholder advocacy on the processes following up to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development ("Rio+20") and the post-2015 development agenda.

World Food Day 2012: A focus on agricultural cooperatives\' role in feeding the world

Inline World Food Day 2012, celebrated worldwide and at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome on 16 October, aimed to raise awareness about the role of cooperatives in providing food in a socially responsible and sustainable manner.

Social and Solidarity Economy - opportunities and challenges

Inline During the Social Forum 2012 of the Human Rights Council, which focused on "People-centred development and globalization," NGLS, in cooperation with UNRISD and Community Forge, organized a side event entitled "Solidarity Economy and Alternative Finance: A Different Development Model" to showcase an alternative approach to development.

First ever International Day of the Girl Child celebrated worldwide on 11 October

Inline The first International Day of the Girl Child, established through UN General Assembly resolution 66/170 in 2011, focused on ending child marriage - the formal marriage or informal union of at least one person under the age of 18. According to Plan International, one in three girls in the developing world is married by the age of 18, therefore facing reduced opportunities in life. This article features UN and civil society events, held in Geneva and New York, to draw international attention to this issue.
