Job creation needs to be top priority for poorer countries, UNCTAD says
Some 49 poor countries, primarily in Africa, risk social or political instability if efforts aren't made to provide well-paying jobs for the underemployed, warns a United Nations Conference on Trade and Development report. UNCTAD recommended focusing on investments that allow countries to develop products from natural resources and to create more labor-intensive industries. UNAIDS detects persistent gaps in treatment of children with HIV
More than 3 million children younger than age 15 have HIV, but just 647,000 of 1.9 million HIV-positive children who required treatment received antiretroviral drugs in 2012, according to a UNAIDS report published on Wednesday. In India and 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, just 3 in 10 children who needed it received HIV treatment. "We have seen tremendous political commitment and results to reduce mother-to-child transmission, but we are failing the children who become infected," UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe said. The United Nations appeal for relief assistance has raised $129 million of the $301 million target set by UN relief chief Valerie Amos. Will climate talks reach consensus on climate change action?
With little time left in this round of United Nations climate change talks, poor and rich countries continued to offer differing plans on how to tackle rising global temperature with little sign of consensus. Today, six observer groups -- Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Oxfam, WWF, ActionAid and the International Trade Union Confederation -- left Warsaw in protest of the lack of progress.
