2 years on, quake-stricken Haiti has a long way to go

Two years after the 7.0 earthquake that devastated much of Haiti, the world response to the disaster is running its course, and aid groups say it could be another decade before the billions in spending could show significant results. In the meantime, some half a million people are homeless, and many Haitians are wondering whether the money was well-spent. "One year ago today, southern Sudanese cast their ballots in a historic referendum to separate from Sudan. Six months ago today, the country officially became an independent nation. But the world's newest country is struggling to find its footing, as internal and external conflict continues to force tens of thousands of South Sudanese from their homes."

  • ICANN tries to quash UN cybersquatter fears
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers on Monday assured the United Nations and more than two dozen other international organizations that the planned expansion of website addresses would not result in top-level domain names -- such as those ending in ".un" -- being registered by so-called cybersquatters who hope to sell the addresses to those with more legitimate claims to them. • New book examines microfinance
A new book, "Due Diligence: An Impertinent Inquiry Into Microfinance," argues that, while microfinance is no more likely to lift people out of poverty than clean water or electricity, it still can provide a vital service to millions of impoverished people who need to better manage their money. In fact, author David Roodman, of the U.S.-based Center for Global Development, writes that microfinance should be seen as a development success in its own right. • Progress across Africa's Sahel can't keep up with crises
The government of Niger, among the least developed countries in the world, has become more efficient and transparent in warning international agencies of impending humanitarian crises. Yet the increasing effects of drought, population growth and weak governance in countries across Africa's Sahel means that such crises are only likely to proliferate. • Egyptian women are still pushing for recognition
Political changes that have been occurring in Egypt since January 2011 have not yet translated into tangible gains for women, Egyptian women's rights advocates say. While women have been able to step forward more forcefully as part of nationwide reform efforts, they remain reliant on men for protection from harassment and abuse that is prevalent in Egyptian society. • Eco-friendly economic growth
As many countries continue to grapple with the effects of the global economic downtown on employment, governments are reluctant to take meaningful steps to prepare for climate change because of fears that they will hurt economic recovery. Three specific policies -- increased energy efficiency, forest preservation and public transport -- can spur growth while combating global warming.
