UN chief seeks sustainable-energy commitment to reduce poverty

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for increased investment in wind, solar, hydroelectric and other sustainable-energy sources as a key piece of global poverty reduction in an address at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. "Why should energy poverty condemn billions to darkness, to missed opportunities for education and prosperity?" Ban said. • Prioritizing the end of polio
The last recorded case of polio in India affected an 18-month-old girl in West Bengal, Rukhsar Khatoon, who recovered from the disease without lasting paralysis -- only a few years ago, the country recorded as many as 100,000 cases a year. Eradication of the disease can happen elsewhere, according to philanthropist Bill Gates, when there is "political will, quality immunization campaigns and an entire nation's determination." Mohamed ElBaradei, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and former head of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency, on Saturday announced that he was abandoning his bid for the presidency of Egypt, citing continued military rule despite the popular political upheaval in the country.
